.ORCHESTRE LÉARDÉE DU CÉLÈBRE BAL COLONIAL DE LA RUE BLOMET - EDAMISO.

The most of you probably already know and remember this great song from Lola Martin compiled by Hugo Mendez (Sofrito-UK) in the great compilation 'Tumbélé' released on SoundWay Records.
Here is the 1st version composed and played by Ernest Léardée and his orchestra in November 1930 in Paris, and released the same year on Salabert record.

Deep, sensitive and beautiful document from the very beginning of the French Caribbean music in Paris, this fantastic part of the patrimony has been compiled by the over interesting label 'Frémeaux & Associés' on a double cd only.

ERNEST LÉARDÉE (1896-1988)

From the little people of Fort-de-France, Ernest Léardée lost his mother at age of 6 and his father at 9 years old. He was raised by his sister Yaya and start practicing very early all kinds of small jobs. A carpenter, Marius Collat, introduced him to music and taught him the violin. The boy is not long to accompany him in the ball of Martinique. Léardée became an apprentice hairdresser while continuing to play the violin in the orchestra of Leon Apanon. He soon earns enough money to start on his own.

In 1919, Stellio comes from Guyana and hired him to play with him at the Gaumont Cinema in Fort-de-France. In April 1929, is the departure for Paris. But Léardée soon left Stellio to form his own orchestra Bal Blomet. He records his first records in 1930 on Salabert. He then abandoned the violin to start playing clarinet and tenor saxophone. He opens successively several cabarets in Paris (l’Élan Noir, le Mirage…).

In February 1938 he went on tour in Germany, Austria and Hungary. In May 1940 he is in Lille when the Germans invaded France. He retired in the Yonne department during the four years of Occupation. From the Liberation Ernest Léardée restarts his musical activity as a conductor in numerous Parisian cabarets, dance halls of the Marne, Province's balls, beach resorts in the summer...

In the '50s and '60s, he participates in the new vogue for Cuban and Latin American rhythms: Cha cha cha, Mambo, Baïon, Samba, Guaracha, Rampa ... which he recorded several records. He retired in 1970 at Fontenay-sous-Bois, where he died in April 1988. Ernest Léardée also led a casino in Saint-Pair-sur-Mer, he founded a music publishing, he is the interpreter of a television commercial for a brand of rice, and left to SACEM more than three hundred compositions.

.GUIZADO - AREIAS.

Last Wednesday, at Matilha Cultural, probably the best alternative place in Sao Paulo, I discovered the music of the trumpeter Guilherme Mendonça aka Guizado. Playing his trumpet over homemade beats controlled by some machines, the vibe was very deep and raw, reminding me the Abstract HipHop scene in early 2000 or even the mood of some dj Krush productions.

I found more from him as soon as I went back home and get his two albums 'Calavera' (2010) and Punx' (2008). I spent the whole next day listening to this very urban mix of jazz, brazilian rhythms and electronic arragements.

Alfredo Bello (officially Luiz Alfredo Coutinho Souto) aka DJ Tudo is one of the pillars of the new musical scene in Brazil.

Musician, producer, DJ and ethnomusicologist,

he worked for over twenty years in many art projects, which allowed him to rub some of the best musicians.

Tenacious researcher of the expressions of Brazilian popular tradition, he travels into Brazil in search of new sounds, exploring the originality of the rituals and traditional ceremonies.

Recordings live traditionnal live bands, he already have 1400 hours of archive.

This vast material led him to the creation of the label Mundo Melhor,

wich has already 22 albums in his catalog.

"Brazilian music is one of the most varied and rich cultural universes and sound of the earth" says Alfredo.

In 'Nos Quintais Do Mundo', recorded between 2002 and 2010 in Brazil, Europe and Africa, the members of the band interpret perfectly the diversity and musicals variations of Brazil.

.ELO DA CORRENTE - MADRUGADA.

Elo Da Corrente is a Brazilian hip hop band formed in Sao Paulo in 2000 with Caio, Pitzan and dj PG.

In 2007, the group release a vinyl in partnership with radio Boomshot and the band Mamelo Sound System before to release on December 2007, on Cd only, their first Lp 'Apos Algumas Estaçoes', wich is a marvel of what hiphop can do best !

Then, in 2009, the band launched the no less good Ep 'O Sonho Dourado da Familia',

still available on vinyl.

Accompanied by his n'goni, a small harp, the tchad Abaye Adam Abakar, has traveled for a long time around the African and European continent as a singer and storyteller.

It was in Toulouse that he meets Nicolas Lafourest, guitarist of 'Cannibales et Vahinés', with whom he formed the band 'La Seconde Méthode'.

The quartet offers a music melting African tradition, trance, rock and noise.

.BOBBY GAYNAIR and EARTH, ROOTS & WATER - COME TOGETHER.

Earth, Roots & Water is the studio session band of Jerry Brown, owner and founder of the Ontario-based Reggae label Summer Sound Studios. Located just outside of Toronto, the studio is known as Canada’s answer to Lee Perry’s Black Ark.

Brown released his first record in 1974 with Johnnie Osborne’s "Sun Rise". Earth, Roots & Water will be credited for the first on the same year, accompanying Bobby Gaynair on "Come Together".
Therefore, Earth, Roots and Water will be the backing band of some of the best reggae music legends who passed through Brown’s now defunct basement studio such as none Prince Jammy, Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, Noel Ellis, Johnnie Osbourne, Stranger Cole, Leroy Sibbles, and Carl Dawkins to name a few.

The 'Summer Records Anthology' (1974-1988) released by Light In The Attic contains crucial catalogue tracks, unreleased masters, and never heard before alternate takes
and his a testament to the dedication and persistence of Jerry Brown and his masterful sonic vision.

.STAFF BENDA BILILI - MOZIKI.

The most of you probably already know this group as well as the documentary about them. I hope nonetheless that you will listen again with pleasure to their music.

Then, for those who do not know yet, this post is for you. And I sincerely hope that you will fall, like me, under the spell of these musicians and their outstanding history !

Staff Benda Bilili is a band originally from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, mainly composed of disabled people.

Affected with polio while their youth, the group members are moving in incredible homemade wheelchairs and are living in the street, surrounded by shégués (vagabonds childrens).

Their music incorporates elements of Congolese rumba, Cuban music, Rhythm'n'Blues, reggae and even Funk.

Staff Benda Bilili argues that disability is primarily psychological, and some of their songs offer advices for living with a disability

Benda Bilili means "look beyond appearances", literally: "put forward what is hidden"

The debut album from Staff Benda Bilili 'Très Très Fort', has been released in April 2009 on Crammed Discs, producer of Konono N°1, Kasai Allstars and Congotronics serie (typical music of Kinshasa's urban areas). The majority of the tracks has been recorded outdoors, especially in the zoologic garden of Kinshasa, where the group usually rehearsal. The musical style of Staff Benda Bilili is unique and very different from what we know of the usual contemporary Congolese music like Papa Wemba for example, but reflects a great inner wealth.

The release of the album creates enthusiastic responses in the international media, especially in France, in Great Britain, and in the United States. The group won several awards, in the fall of 2009, he made its first European tour. In 2010, members provide 90 concerts across Europe and Japan, and they play in the United States in 2011.

The film Benda Bilili!

Florent de La Tullaye and Renaud Barret, whose original project was to make a documentary about the urban music of Kinshasa, decided to devote to the group a feature film, Benda Bilili!

Started in 2004, the shooting, interrupted by the burning of the foyer in which the Staff lived with women and children, leaving the musicians on the street, was completed in December 2009.

Genuine and deep human adventure, the result is a true fairy tale, an african 'Buena Vista Social Club' with customized wheelchairs, telling how a band of disabled musicians swapped the streets of the Congolese capital to the scenes of Europe.

The film has been presented at Cannes Festival in 2010 as part of the Directors' Fortnight and was released to cinema in October 2010.
